About Us – District Education Councils

SINCE 1816,

school boards have acted as a catalyst by seeking input from a wide variety of people from the community and staff in the decisions they make, to ensure student success based on community values and expectations for their schools. We now know them as the District Education Council (DEC).

ELECTED MEMBERS

Democratically elected, the district education councils’ members are made up of citizens from across the territory of their respective school district.

“Education, at all its levels, essentially represents one of the greatest societal responsibilities towards humans, thus making communities inseparable from any public education system.”

THEIR ROLE

Elected officials are responsible for influencing student achievement across the school district by initiating, monitoring, and supporting efforts to improve student achievement.

RESPONSIBILITY

Education Councils are responsible for establishing a multi-year strategic plan to set long-term goals and priorities. Based on conclusive data, monitoring is done with performance indicators and mechanisms that inform stakeholders of the progress of the school districts within the framework of the strategic plan, its projects and the resources deployed.
